Siargao’s very own John Mark "Marama" Tokong will have to keep up his pace — and possibly, even go beyond — at these upcoming events in Australia in order to secure his spot for the WSL Challenger Series. Only the top 5 men’s surfers (plus 1 wild card) will qualify — giving Marama the opportunity to become the first-ever Filipino to advance onto the Challenger Series.

Held in the longboard capital of the PH, La Union will host the best FIlipina longboarders, who will then share the waves with some international surfers from Asia and beyond. Suffice it to say, Queen of the Point is a surf event that’s uniquely created by women for women. This event aims to provide a platform to lady longboarders to showcase their skill without being clouded by other events or divisions.
2023 will begin with a bang as the World Surf League (WSL) lands in Urbiztondo Beach for the first time through the WSL La Union International Pro. The Surfing Capital of the North will host not only a QS 3000 event for Men’s and Women’s Shortboard but also a QS 1000 event for Men’s and Women’s Longboard from January 20-26.
Before the name Dandoy Tongco was synonymous to locally shaped surfboards, the name was tied to Dandoy being a long time surfer and skateboarder from Northern Samar. Riding alongside his friend, Juan, since Dandoy was just 10 years old, his journey took a turn for the better from being a rider to a shaper in the years that came after.
With Vissla highlighting the importance of minimizing their environmental impact in order to “protect the oceans and waves that raised us,” we couldn’t think of two better surfers to take on the job than Marama and Philmar. Both of them were born and raised on the waves of Siargao and have led the pack that pushed the level of Philippine surfing to an international level, while also emphasizing the importance of caring for the ocean for generations to come.
Surf competitions also provide the platform for local surfers to harness, develop, and test their skills. For professional surfers looking to increase their rankings and perhaps, even make a bid for their Olympic dreams, these competitions help them in getting recognized and making a name for themselves within the national surf scene.
With sporting events back in full force for 2022, we’re seeing the long-awaited return of surfing events within Asia and most especially, in the Philippines.
