Meet Ian Zamora, the man behind Zamora surfboards.
Ian was born in Quezon City and moved to the States when he was 14 years old in the late 90s. Whilst he does not live in the Philippines, he has maintained and cultivated strong ties with the Filipino surf community, and has been active in the Elyu surfing scene. He can’t remember how long he has been shaping boards, 20+ years he says, a very long time for sure.
Ian prides himself on that shaper-surfer relationship, and meticulously creates custom boards to suit the surfer. He started his shaping journey with mids and shortboards, and he can easily whip a finely tuned log in just a couple of hours. He was engaged in the experimental era of surfboarding in California. We’re talking rails, fin setup, tails of all shapes and sizes. Now with a return back to basics, his longboard model the “California Gold” has made its mark on the surfing scene, and is even used by Filipino athletes like Daisy Valdez, Perry Ventura and Rico Dumaguin.
Ian just returned to the States from a shaping trip in the Philippines, collaborating with AFrame to shape 18 custom surfboards in Cebu. We were lucky enough to catch up with him in Siargao where he shaped one additional board, a 7’0 stringer-less middie, completed in an hour and a half (of course).
Now he is making a Siargao launch and we are proud to be an official reseller of Zamora surfboards. Keep your eyes peeled for the first drop, a sampler set of his favorite mid lengths.
